With the boiler pressure at a minimum of 75% of the safety valve set pressure, the safety valve try lever is lifted to wide open position. Steam is discharged for 5 sec to 10 sec. The try lever is released, and the disk should snap to the closed position against the valve seat. Malfunctioning safety valves must be replaced as soon as possible.
